St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church
Our County Historical Commission is pleased to announce the dedication of a new county historical marker on Saturday, November 16, at 2pm, at the St Matthews Missionary Baptist Church on East Phillips. Everyone is invited to attend this dedication ceremony.
Founded in 1889 by 3 former African American slaves, the small white frame church is the oldest operating church in Conroe. Attached is a historical narrative of the church as researched and written by our MCHC member Andy Rapoza. Photos of the Church are found below.
Led by Jack Carrel, members of the History Taskforce spent today with Ms. Franklin, Pastor Taylor, and a volunteer from the community cleaning the landscape at St. Matthews Baptist Church, preparing for the unveiling of the new historical marker ceremony on November 16th. Overgrown trees and bushes were trimmed to allow a view from both streets of the new marker. Please note how Hurricane Beryl peeled back the metal roof on the bell tower. That won’t be repaired by the day of the unveiling, but the Taskforce is working with the church to plan the most urgent repairs needed. We will assist them with recruiting volunteers and conduct some fundraising for their needs over the next year.
Marker sponsors are Friends of St Matthews Baptist Church, Precinct No. 1 Commissioner Robert Walker, Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack, and Andy and wife, Gail Rapoza.
